Platelet Count: What Your Results Mean

Platelets are tiny blood cells that help your blood clot when you are injured. They are essential for wound healing and preventing excessive bleeding. Platelet count abnormalities can indicate bleeding disorders or clotting risks.

What Your Results Mean

Normal

A normal platelet count means your blood has adequate clotting ability to heal wounds and stop bleeding from minor injuries.

High

High platelets (thrombocytosis) can increase the risk of blood clots (thrombosis), which can lead to stroke or heart attack. It can be reactive (from infection or inflammation) or a sign of a bone marrow disorder.

Low

Low platelets (thrombocytopenia) increase the risk of bruising and bleeding. Severe thrombocytopenia (below 20,000) can cause spontaneous dangerous bleeding.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a normal platelet count? expand_more
150,000–400,000 platelets per microliter (150–400 x10³/µL) is normal. Below 150 is low. Above 400 is high.
What causes low platelet count? expand_more
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), viral infections (dengue, HIV), certain medications, chemotherapy, liver disease, and bone marrow disorders.
What causes high platelet count? expand_more
Iron deficiency, infection, inflammation, post-surgery response, and rarely essential thrombocythemia (a bone marrow disorder).
When is a low platelet count dangerous? expand_more
Counts below 50,000 increase bleeding risk with procedures. Below 20,000 can cause spontaneous bleeding in the skin, gums, or brain and requires immediate medical attention.
